EU Commission work programme for 2023 contains few waste-related initiatives

The European Commission plans to table its proposals on food waste prevention and improved textile waste management in the second quarter of 2023, according to the body's work programme for the coming year which was presented on Tuesday. The planned "Critical Raw Materials Act" and related measures are to be launched in the first quarter of next year. The Act is to "ensure an adequate and diversified supply for Europe’s digital economy as well as for the green transition and prioritise re-use and recycling", according to the Commission's Communication.

The legislative measures on food waste and textiles are to be part of amendments to the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). Next year‘s revision of this central piece of EU waste legislation is to be limited to these areas. The goals for textiles include improving recycling and ensuring that "producers bear greater responsibility for waste treatment"....
