The European Commission is working on a soil protection law for the EU. Its aim will be to ensure that soil in the EU enjoys the same level of protection as water, the marine environment and air. As part of the preparations for this legislative proposal, which is to be tabled next year, the EU Commission has now opened a public consultation. It will run until 24 October.
In addition to preventive measures for soil protection, the consultation also covers the restoration of degraded soils including the remediation of contaminated sites, and the use of excavated soil. Among other things, the consultation questionnaire presents several potential measures to ensure "the safe transportation, treatment, or reuse of excavated soil"....
