Around 89m tonnes of food is wasted every year in the European Union, which corresponds to around 179kg per person. This estimate, however, does not include the waste generated by the agriculture and fishing sector, the European Commission announced in view of the World Food Day on Thursday. If no additional preventive and corrective measures are introduced, the annual volume of food wasted may rise by 40 per cent to around 126m tonnes by 2020, the EU body cautioned.
Food wasted in the EU forecast to reach 126m tonnes by 2020
