PPWR: Committee adds plastic packaging waste reduction targets

The European Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI) wants to establish specific targets for the reduction of plastic packaging waste in the future EU Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR). The legislative text approved by the committee members includes a provision that would require each member state to achieve a reduction in the amount of plastic packaging waste generated per resident each year, measured against the 2018 baseline. The EU Commission’s original PPWR proposal only set out targets for the reduction of per capita arisings of all packaging waste materials taken together. According to the latest figures from the EU statistics office Eurostat, the amount of packaging waste reached an all-time high in the EU in 2021.
