The EU Commission seeks “views on the main policy options for developing an ambitious new approach on the circular economy” in a public consultation opened on Thursday. The participants’ comments, which may be submitted until 20 August 2015, are to “help feed the preparation” of the new action which the EU authority plans to table before the end of the year.

“We need to use our resources more intelligently, design our products with a view to their re-use and recycling, and set ambitious targets for waste reduction and recycling,” commented Frans Timmermans, the Commission’s First Vice-President, at the launch of the consultation. Mr Timmermans leads the project team which will draw up the new proposals. Besides Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella, the group also comprises Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, responsible for jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness, and Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska, responsible for the internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SME.
