Denmark’s largest sorting plant for packaging waste starts up

German plant builder Eggersmann has announced that it has successfully completed the construction of Denmark’s largest processing plant for lightweight packaging waste. The new facility in Esbjerg was commissioned by operator ReSource Denmark Aps, a 50-50 joint venture between the Norwegian chemical recycling firm Quantafuel and the financial investor Eurazeo. The cost of the project had been estimated at NOK670m, the equivalent of around €58m, according to Quantafuel.

The new plant is to process up to 160,000 tonnes per year of lightweight packaging waste per year from Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. The facility will sort plastic and metal packaging and beverage cartons waste for subsequent mechanical and chemical recycling. It separates the input material into eleven different output streams, including plastic fractions such as LDPE, HDPE, PP and PE film, as well as composite materials and magnetic and non-magnetic metals.
