A deposit return system (DRS) for beverage packaging began operations in Romania on 30 November. The system covers single-use primary packaging made of glass, plastic or metal for diverse products such as water, soft drinks, beer, apple cider, wine and liquor in bottles or cans with a volume of between 0.1 and 3 litres. The deposit has been set at RON0.50 (roughly €0.10) for all of the beverage packaging types.
The DRS is operated by the non-profit firm RetuRO Sistem Garantie Returnare SA (RetuRO SGR), which was founded by the Romanian industry associations representing retailers, breweries and soft drink producers. The environment ministry holds a 20 per cent stake in the system operator....
