EEW commissioning sewage sludge incineration plant at Stavenhagen

The plant operator EEW Energy from Waste has started the process of cold commissioning its mono-incineration plant for sewage sludge in the north-eastern German town of Stavenhagen. Waste heat from the incineration of sewage sludge will provide district heating to the town of Stavenhagen, while incineration ash containing phosphate will be recycled to make fertiliser once regular operations begin at the start of next year. Technical managing director Morten Holpert presented these plans at a visit by the State Economic Minister for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Reinhard Meyer, on 24 August.

EEW said the plant, which is to recycle sewage sludge from the region, would be the largest of its kind north of Berlin. The €50m facility would incinerate up to 160,000 tonnes of compressed sewage sludge each year. The company also plans to use CO2 generated during incineration to produce methanol as a green synthetic fuel (e-fuel). An electrolyser running on renewable energy would deliver the hydrogen needed....
