According to figures from the European statistics authority Eurostat, exports to third countries totalled 1.1 million tonnes in 2021, 18 per cent more than in 2020, when around 950,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap left the EU. Export volumes from the EU also increased significantly for most other non-ferrous scrap metals, while import volumes fell for the most part.

One of the largest year-over-year increases was seen for aluminium scrap exports to India, up 53,000 tonnes in annual comparison. With a total volume of 296,000 tonne, India remains by far the most important destination country for European aluminium scrap, followed by Turkey. The volume of aluminium waste and scrap shipped by the EU states to that country rose by half year-on-year to 131,000 tonnes. Another sizable jump was observed in the export trade to Pakistan – ranked third among the most important destination countries – which received 20,000 tonnes more than in the previous year at 104,000 tonnes.
