The European PVC industry significantly increased its recycling volumes in 2021. According to the progress report released by the organisation VinylPlus, the volume of PVC recyclate rose from 731,000 tonnes in 2020 to nearly 811,000 tonnes last year. Around two-thirds of the total amount, or 550,000 tonnes, came from the pre-consumer segment, while the volumes from the post-consumer segment declined from 312,000 to 295,000 tonnes.

The total recycled tonnages correspond to 26.9 per cent of the estimated available volumes of PVC waste in Europe (defined as the EU-27 plus Norway, Switzerland and the UK). As part of its "Vinyl 2030” initiative, VinylPlus committed to recycling at least 900,000 tonnes of PVC waste into new products per year by 2025. By 2030, this is to rise to 1 million tonnes. The growth in recycling was achieved despite the setbacks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, according to the progress report.
