Demand for waste plastics in Germany plummets in June

Plastic recycling remains under extreme pressure in Germany. EUWID market sources described demand as even worse in June than it had been in May. “Nothing’s selling anymore,” one recycler remarked. Orders were cancelled at short notice, warehouses were full and sales were at a minimum. Companies were trying to limit the damage, bringing forward company holidays and reducing overtime. Regrinders were already shutting down production, with redundancies reported here and there, sources added. In some industry segments, businesses were already struggling to survive.

Experts added that there were no signs of good news on the horizon at the moment, either. Key buyers of recycled plastic, such as the construction industry, were contending with t substantial decreases in demand in their own businesses, with the drop reaching 50 to 60 per cent in some instances. The recession, inflation and high interest rates were causing a slump in the German economy. A few insiders who spoke with EUWID said the situation was even worse than during the global economic and financial crisis of 2008. Compounding matters, recyclers are often being confronted with cheap prices for primary plastic, which plunged once again in June.
