Downtimes and RDF from cement plants create pressure on German waste incineration market

Even though arisings of commercial and municipal waste are contracting in Germany due to the country’s sputtering economy, various demand-side factors are creating increased volume pressure on the waste incineration market. Gate fees prices charged by waste to energy (wte) plants are therefore heading higher, an EUWID market survey found in July 2023.

Players report that municipal waste volumes are stable or down by a few percentage points, which they mainly attribute to the economic situation. One operator of a municipally owned wte plant in southern Germany said they were seeing a slight volume decline for the first time since 2005. The operator said this was due to the launch of separate collections of organic waste in some its catchment area, which led to a decrease in the residual waste volume.
