No sign of a rebound in September for Germany's waste plastics market

The upswing that players had been hoping to see on the German waste plastics market in September did not materialise. Although prices did not fall any further, business volumes stalled at a low level. Demand for regrind and regranulate remains weak because there was nothing lending momentum to the sector and no new measures from policymakers that would boost demand, market participants complain. Recyclers are worried about the looming hike in road tolls in Germany, which they say is likely to increase freight costs by 6-12 per cent higher as of December. This increase is coming at the worst time, complain some market participants.

On the positive side, some customers are apparently showing renewed interest in using recyclate. One recycler reports receiving inquiries, especially for clear grades of LDPE, HDPE and PP. The latest price increases for primary plastics in Europe had not yet had an impact on the recyclate market. Inexpensive primary plastic is still available from North America, explained one converter.
