Uncertain times ahead for the German waste textiles market

Germany’s textile recyclers are looking ahead to the new year with some uncertainty after a challenging 2022: “The market will remain this way for some time to come,” one major collector forecast. Another said that they were “cautiously optimistic.” Yet, another market player expects at least the first quarter to be good because they have received enough orders. But beyond this, there is often a great deal of uncertainty, especially when it comes to energy and raw material costs.

The market was fairly quiet at the moment. Original collected stock remains in short supply and sought-after, but “we’re getting by”, one major sorter remarked. Still, there was no money to be made, another sorter stressed, saying at the end of the day, they would end up just breaking even for 2022. Original collected stock was actually still too expensive for its quality, something that was certainly “menacing” looking ahead to 2023. The large amount of waste or unusable material in collected stock was also a problem....
