The European Commission has referred Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) for failing to meet its obligations under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). The case centres on around 200 illegal waste sites in Spain that had not been shut down and remediated.
Under the WFD (2008/98/EC) member states must ensure that waste management activities do not endanger either human health or the environment.
