England: Landfill tax to hit £126/t in 2025

British chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a hefty hike to England's landfill tax as part of the 2024 spring budget report he presented last week. "To account for recent high inflation" the standard landfill tax rate is to undergo a one-off adjustment from £103.70/t to £126.15/tonne, or approximately €148/t (£1 = ca. €1.17). The lower rate for inert or inactive waste will be increased from £3.30/tonne to £4.05/tonne, according to the budget report.

The Environment Services Association, which represents private-sector waste management businesses, welcomed the announcement that landfill tax rates would be raised. "Recent inflation spikes have not been accounted for in determining the rate of landfill tax which has eroded the competitiveness of alternative waste treatment and recycling facilities," said the industry association's executive director Jacob Hayler.
