The Dutch Government dissolved its national Plastic Pact at the start of the year, the Dutch Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Water, Vivianne Heijnen, announced in mid-February. Launched in February 2019, the Dutch Plastic Pact was supported by 75 companies and environmental organisations and the Ministry of Environment.

The key objectives of the agreement included reducing plastic use by 20 per cent between the baseline year of 2017 and 2025. Additionally, at least 70 per cent of all single-use plastic packaging was to be recycled by 2025; new single-use packaging was to have an average recycled content rate of at least 35 per cent, while new plastic products were to be 100 per cent recyclable and, where possible, reusable.

According to Ms Heijnen, the challenges of making the plastic value chain sustainable have not lessened, but the Plastic Pact no longer appears to be the "best way to innovate together".
