Waste is a cross-border business, not limited to brisk international trade in "green listed" recyclable materials, such as recovered paper, waste plastics and scrap metals. A glance at statistics covering transfrontier shipments of other wastes, both hazardous and non-hazardous, reveals sharp growth in notified intra-European imports and exports in the past several years. Recently released figures from Eurostat show that the amount of waste subject to the prior notification and consent procedure imported and exported by EU member states has more than doubled over the past decade. France is the leading exporter of notified waste, while Germany is the biggest importer.
