EU Parliament has approved new Waste Shipments Regulation

The new EU Regulation on Shipments of Waste (WSR) is on the home straight. At its plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday, the European Parliament approved the text negotiated at the end of last year. The Regulation received 587 votes in favour, eight against and 33 abstentions. 

As the next step, the Council of the EU will now also have to formally endorse the new WSR to complete the final adoption of the legislation.

"The revised law will bring more certainty to Europeans that our waste will be appropriately managed, no matter where it is shipped to. The EU will finally assume responsibility for its plastic waste by banning its export to non-OECD countries," said Danish MEP Pernille Weiss (EPP), the Parliament's rapporteur on the legislative project. "Waste is a resource when it is properly managed, but should not in any case be causing harm to the environment or human health."...
