EU Parliament votes to ban waste plastic exports

The European Parliament adopted its first reading position on the amendment of the EU Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR) at the plenary session in Strasbourg today, voting for the report from rapporteur Pernille Weiss by an overwhelming majority. The draft legislation includes measures further tightening the rules on transboundary shipments of plastic waste, including trans frontier shipments within the European Union.

The text would see exports of waste plastics to non-OECD countries banned as soon as the revised WSR comes into force. Shipments to OECD countries outside the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) area would be banned four years later, potentially in 2027.
