The number of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) recorded in the European Union has increased in 2021. The European statistics authority Eurostat reported an upturn in ELV volumes in that year after a minor downturn between 2018 and 2019 and a sharp fall in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. The figures show that scrap car arisings increased by around 300,000 vehicles or six per cent in 2021. Italy and Poland, in particular, had many more vehicles scrapped in the year, while Germany’s ELV numbers bucked the trend with a decrease.

For the second year in a row, Eurostat reported a minor downturn in recovery and recycling rates. On average, the recycling/reuse rate stood at 88 per cent, while the overall recovery rate including recycling, reuse and energy recovery reached 94 per cent. Most EU member states did meet the targets in the current version of the EU ELV Directive.
