UK aims to halve residual waste by 2042

The British government will seek to dramatically decrease residual waste arisings over the course of the next 20 years. Halving the waste that ends up at landfill or incineration by 2042 is one of several new, long-term targets announced by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) in mid-March. The 50 per cent reduction is to be measured per capita and relative to 2019 levels, which are estimated at 560 kg per capita.

According to Defra, meeting the ambitious target would require the UK to achieve a recycling rate of around 70-75 per cent for municipal waste by 2042. Its current target is 65 per cent by 2035....
