Swiss waste to energy technology supplier Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) is part of a consortium that is to retrofit a facility in Padua, Italy. The Termovalorizzatore di Padova was initially a two-line plant when it first went online in 1962. The energy from waste (EfW) facility now includes a third line which was installed in 2010. The plant is owned and operated by the Hera group via its subsidiary Herambiente.

The current project will see the two older lines replaced with a new, highly efficient fourth line for which HZI is to design and deliver the grate combustion technology. The new line is to process non-hazardous municipal solid waste and to have a nominal throughput of 12.5 tonnes per hour, which corresponds to a nominal annual throughput of 100,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste. The combined thermal output of the new lines stands at 43.6 MW.

The Swiss plant engineering company is part of a larger consortium consisting of Italian boiler manufacturer Ruths S.p.A., which is to supply the new waste to energy (wte) line’s boiler and will lead the construction and commissioning phases. "This is a very important project for HZI and demonstrates that our grate combustion technology is being sought out by clients for retrofit projects as well as new-build waste to energy projects around the world," said Fabio Dinale, EVP business development at HZI.
