Lyondell Basell commits to building chemical recycling plant in Germany

Chemicals group LyondellBasell announced on Monday that it will proceed with the construction of its first industrial-scale demonstration plant for catalytic advanced recycling using its "MoReTec" technology. The single-train chemical recycling facility is to process up to 50,000 tonnes of post-consumer plastic packaging waste per year and will be located at LyondellBasell's petrochemicals complex in Wesseling, Germany, just south of Cologne. The plant is currently scheduled to be operational before the end of 2025.

Much of the plant's input of sorted post-consumer plastic waste is to be supplied by Source One Plastics, a joint venture founded by LyondellBasell and 23 Oaks Investments in October 2022. Those input materials are to include hard-to-recycled plastics such as mixed or flexible materials, Lyondell Basell explained.
