The Belgian metallurgical group Umicore has been granted a €350m loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to further develop its electric vehicle battery (EV) materials and EV battery recycling activities. In a joint statement with the EIB, the company said on Wednesday that the proceeds would be used to fund its "European research, development & innovation (RDI) in rechargeable battery materials technologies for EVs and the recycling of EV batteries".
The Belgian company plans a major expansion in EV battery materials and battery recycling. In 2022, Umicore announced plans to invest a total of €5bn in these business areas by 2026.
